could the prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم read.?

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Saturday 14th April, 2007

when jibril عليه سلم came with the verse starting IQRA, the prophet replied “ma ana bi qari’in” this happened three times. the fourth time jibril عليه سلم recited or asked for this to be recited “iqra bismi rabbik alladhi……...” the prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم recited it becoz the name of allah azzawajal was mentioned and it wasn’t mentioned earlier.

those that propagate that our beloved prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم was illiterate or could not read and write etc, derive their ruling from the words ma ana bi qari’in to mean i cannot read or i do not know how to read, but the sad fact explained by shaykh mih pirzada is that according to arabic grammar ma ana bi qari’in can have three different interpretations only and neither of them being “i cannot read“.

the more accurate meaning could be i do not want to read. see video’s below for further understanding.
