The virtues of the Sahabee Hazrat Muawya

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Monday 24th February, 2014

All praise belongs to Allah ,the onlyeternal being worthy of worship. Peace and Saluations be open His beloved, our Intecessor and Savior Muhammad

The reason that makes me write about the virtues of the Sahabee Muawya (رضي الله عنه ) is because every Muslim who has enough Islamic knowledge and knows a foreign language other than Arabic should – at his capacity – introduce the virtues of this great Sahabee to Muslims who can not read Arabic . Because misguided books of Shi’ites and Habashees and other groups that stab the image of this great Sahabee may fall into their hands, and then suspicions around this Sahabee and others may begin to turn in their heads and they may not find writings in their language that answers these suspicions . And in the Islamic religion, Muawya (رضي الله عنه) is a test : – – If you love him, your faith is correct .

– and if you hate him, your faith is incorrect .

Sheikh al-Islam Abed Allah Ibn al-Mubarak (رحمه الله) said : ” Muawya among us is a test, who looks towards him in disregard we accuse him of misguided opinion in the Sahabah ” .And when a person asked Ibn al-Mubarak who is better, Muawya or Omar Bin Abed al-Aziz ? He answered : ” The dust that entered Muawya’s nose when he accompanied the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) is better than Omar Bin Abed al-Aziz !

Rabeaa Bin Nafeaa (رحمه الله) said : ” Muawya is the curtain that covers the Sahabah, If a person opens that curtain he will dare on what is behind it ” .

I will now mention some of the hadiths that speak about the virtues of the Sahabee Muawya

1 – Abed ar-Rahman Bin Abee Oumairah (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) said to Muawya as a du’aa :

” O Allah ! Make him a guider, guiden to the right path, and guide through him ” .

( Recorded by Tirmithee 3842, and verified to be authentic by Albani in Silsilat as-Saheehah 1969 )

2 – Al-Aarbad bin Sariyah as-Sulamee (رضي الله عنه) reported that he heard the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) saying as a du’aa :

” O Allah ! Teach Muawya the Book and the Math, and save him from the punishment ” .

( explanation :

– Book = Quran .

– Math = because it is needed in ruling .

– Save him from the punishment = for the mistakes that is done during ruling) .

( Recorded by Imam Ahmad 17202

3 – Umm Haram al-Ansariyah (رضي الله عنها) reported that she heard the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) say :

” The first army of my ummah (nation) that invades tha sea, all there sins are forgiven ” .

( Recorded by al-Bukhari 2924 )

Hafez Ibn hajar said in Fateh al-Baree (6-127) : ” Muhallab said : In this hadith there is a virtue of Muawya, because he was the first to invade the sea ” .

Tabaree reported in his history that Muawya (رضي الله عنه) first invaded the sea in the year 28 h .

4 – Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) reported that the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) told him :

” Go bring Muawya to Me “, because he wrote down Allah’s Revelation (Wahy) for the Prophet . ( Recorded by Imam Ahmad 2651

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmuaa’ al-Fatawah 4-288 : ” It is confirmed by many that Muawya was a faithful companion of the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) who wrote down Allah’s Revelation, and the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) did not accuse him in his writing of the Revelation . Also, the khalifah Omar Bin al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) – who was the most experienced in knowing men – appointed Muawya as a ruler on the state of Sham (it includes Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Jordan) until Omar’s death . The khalifah Othman (رضي الله عنه) also kept Muawya in his position during his state, and neither of them accused Muawya in his rule ” .

The Uncle of Believers (خال المؤمنين) Muawya (رضي الله عنه) died in Rajab in the year 60 h . He lived for seventy seven years .

“اللهم علّم معاوية الكتاب والحساب ، وقِهِ العذاب

3 – Umm Haram al-Ansariyah (رضي الله عنها) reported that she heard the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) say :

” The first army of my ummah (nation) that invades tha sea, all there sins are forgiven ” .

“أول جيش من أمتي يغزون البحر مغفورٌ لهم

isn’t my words, but the words of the great ( Ibn al-Mubarak ) ( died 181 H ) : He said :We consider Muawyah as a test, whoever we see ( ………… ) we accuse his faith in Sahabah .

The arabic text is : روى ابن عساكر في « تاريخ دمشق » (59/211) بإسناده عن عبدالله بن المبارك رحمه الله قال : معاوية عندنا محنة فمن رأيناه ينظر إليه شزراً اتهمناه على القوم يعني ، يعني الصحابة .

What is between brackets I didn’t interpret it because I want a brother who is a good interpretor to translate it, because I am in a hurry & so as to be accurate .

May he also translate the following – or some of it – because they are related :

The new hilal of shawwal will not be visible on 17th or 18th of August in saudi…..

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Saturday 11th August, 2012

It will not be surprising to hear that, the bright eyed person who sighted the new hilal for ramadan on the 19th of july will once again step forward and claim the sighting of the new hilal for shawwal on the 18th of August. For hanafis living in the UK/USA, it will be very interesting to note the rule of “jamee ghafeer”. Which is, when the skies are clear with no obstruction, the sighting must be confirmed by a large number of people. According to Imam Abu Yusuf (RA), a minimum of 50 people must have reported the sighting.

Firstly, the sighting in saudi on the 19th of july 2012 was claimed by one unknown individual despite the fact that the officials assigned to the task (almost 60 in total thru out saudi) with hi-tech equipment were unable to make any positive sightings.

without doubt, saudis will be asked to attempt to sight the moon on the 17th of august. it will be impossible to make a sighting in saudi on that date, so it will be confirmed that ramadan will complete 30 days and nobody will bother to check whether the moon is visible on the following day. however, according to hanafi fiqh if the moon is not sighted on the 30th of ramadan, then without doubt the sighting of 19th july was false or a mistake. In this situation, what does hanafi fiqh advise..?

If the people begin Ramadan based on the testimony of a single person, and then they complete THIRTY DAYS of fasting and thereafter no one sees the moon of EID AL-FITR even though the sky is clear, it is not permitted for them to cease fasting (which is the view agreed upon in the Madhhab. This means that the person who first witnessed the moon of Ramadan was mistaken, and that it was not Ramadan. hence, they are to fast this day also. ie. their 1st ramadan does not count as a fast of ramadan).

Scholars however differed on, if  Ramadan was established on the testimony of two upright persons (and then thirty days are completed and yet no one sees the moon for Eid al-Fitr even though the sky is clear); do they fast another day? Or do they celebrate Eid al- Fitr?

Many experts held that they are to fast another day, because the fact  that the moon is not observed on a clear day is proof of their mistake.

what will our hanafi brothers and sisters living in the UK/USA say on this.? we all shout and scream about adhering to the hanafi madhaab, but on such issues all we hear is silence.

An Interesting Story

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Wednesday 1st August, 2012

Allah (SWT) gave me a chance to work and stay in Saudi Arabia for about 5 years (1416-1421H / 1995-2000). I wanted to use my stay to find out about the system for Hilaal sighting there, and to check my personal sighting attempts there. I also wanted to find more about the “UmmUlQura Calendar”. First, as was perhaps expected, I found that most local people had no idea of any mistakes in the Saudi announcements for Hilaal, and an extremely small percentage of my local Saudi practicing Muslim friends had ever attempted to sight the Hilaal in their life. Then Alhamduilillaah I was able to meet some Astronomers and also find that the UmmUlQura Calendar is designed in KACST – the prestigious King Abdul Aziz University for Science and Technology in Riyadh. UmmUlQura Calendar.

The local Astronomers brothers I met were very warm and welcoming. I found that there has been a major change in the UmmUlQura Calendar computation criteria starting 1420H. Before that year, the UmmUlQura calendar was based on Greenwich and not Makkah. Also it was based on the dark invisible Astronomical new moon being born. Thus it was totally different from the actual Hilaal observation. Starting about 1420H, the new criterion is that the Moonset be after Sunset in Makkah (even by one second). Starting 1423H Insha’Allaah it will again change slightly to directly take the astronomical new moon (conjunction) also into account. But the main input I got was that the UmmUlQura calendar was for CIVIL use only, and NOT for predicting the Hilaal for religious dates. The Astronomers were well aware that the moonset needs to be after sunset by a long time, and not just one second (along with other factors) for the Hilaal to be visible. But the point was that the UmmUlQura calendar neither attempts nor claims to predict the Hilaal. It is merely used for the official dates in the Ministries, schools, Saudia Airlines, and indeed all over the country Alhamdulillaah. Also, the local Astronomers were very well aware that there were a LOT of errors in the Saudi announced dates.

Official Saudi Hilaal Sighting Committees

Further, I was found that due to the Saudi Government becoming aware of the complaints of errors in the announced dates, around 1419H, the ruling council ordered the formation of Hilaal sighting committees.

Each such committee includes:

one member of Qada (Islamic Scholar/Justice department),

one member of KACST/Astronomer,

one member of Imarah (ruling council of the city), and

As of 1421H / 2000 there were six such committees in Saudi Arabia – near Makkah, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Tabuk and Asir. While they may carry a telescope with them, the official sighting of the committee is with naked eye only. Saudi scholars like Sheikh AlOthaimeen (RH) are against use of telescopes. Sheikh AlOthaimeen (RH) for example indicated that using telescopes increases the “Takalluf” (Burden) on Muslims, which Allaah (SWT) does not want. These official committees seemed to be a wonderful news and excellent solution Alhamdulillaah. So why should there still be a problem ?

Well, the answer is as follows:

The problem is because even though these 6 official Hilaal sighting committees exist, the Justice department still accepts the witness of “any” Muslim and not just the 6 official committees mentioned above. Thus, often the new month is declared while NONE of these 6 official Hilaal sighting committees saw the Hilaal. In fact, most people, including scholars are unaware of the existence of these official committees.

In the case of EidUlFitr 1420H, I myself went with the Makkah committee to a sighting point on a hilltop of Shamesi outside the city of Makkah Mukarramah on Thursday evening. Neither we, nor the other 5 committees sighted the Hilaal. But we came back to the Haram Shareef and were astounded to hear the announcement that EidUlFitr was next day (Friday). In fact moonset was before sunset in Makkah for Thursday evening. In this case the error was quite brazen. Later I learned that Sheikh Yusuf AlQaradawi issued a Fatwa indicating that Muslims who celebrated Eid 1420H on Friday following the Saudi announcement should make up one missed Ramadaan fast………………………….Dr Salman Shaikh

Taraweeh – 8 or 20 rakats..??

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Wednesday 1st August, 2012

In recent years this has been a debate that has always popped up from the brothers of the so-called salaf. The debate has been done and dusted but we continue to hear it coming from our dear BORN AGAIN MUSLIM brothers and sisters. So, i thought i’d just put this up anyway.

………the vast MAJORITY of the scholars of hadith, Fiqh, and even the four Mujtahid Imams are in agreement that 20 rak’ahs are the most appropriate, followed by 3 rak’ahs of witr, and this is also the opinion of the Imam of the “Salafiyya”, Ahmad ibn Taymiyya!

……it should be said that the hadith reported from Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) about 11 rak’ahs is not at all to do with taraweeh, according to the majority of scholars, but in fact concerns the number of rak’ahs of TAHAJJUD prayer! [ on..]

Evidence for 20 rak’ahs of Taraweeh from authentic ahadith

self-taught scholars – an enemy of the ummah

Posted by Abd Al Mustafa on Friday 27th July, 2012

A little knowledge is dangerous knowledge – when a person has a small amount of knowledge and then pretends to be a shaykh giving lectures and teaching at institutions is the biggest danger to the ummah today. And we have a lot of them in our time. Even if the individual does not say he is a shaykh or an expert, but is invited to conferences and seminars to give talks on the deen and he  goes along doing so knowing that he does not have an actual formal education in the field ie. not having studied at an institution or under a shaykh who went on to give him ijazah, is one of the main reasons for the excess amounts of fitna around today.

We find these days many so-called scholars who have been to the university of madinah al-munawwara to study, and have returned to fill imam vacancies. They immediately start to spread their filth. However, when they are approached and a detailed discussion takes way you find that they have no knowledge of hadith or tafsir let alone the principles of fiqh and shariah. You find that they actually went over and learned a bit of arabic (and i say a bit, even their arabic is poor) and memorised a few ahadith. Becoz they fluently recite arabic texts, the laymen immediately assume this person is learned.

A well known scholar ‘Dr Yusuf Qardawi’ said in his book  ‘Islamic  awakening  between Rejection and Extremism’ (pg.  41-3):  “Imam al-Shatibi (Rahimahullah) wrote (in his book  al-I’tisam,  2.  182-4):  ‘Ibn  Abbas  (Allah  be pleased with him) was right.  When a person knows the reason behind a certain  verse or surah, he knows  how to  interpret  it and what its objectives are.  However, ignorance  of  that  leads people  to misinterpret  it and to have different  opinions,  without an insight and  knowledge  which could lead them to the truth, and prevent  them from indulging ignorantly in such matters with no support or evidence from al Shari’ah,  and  therefore  go astray and lead people  astray. This can be  demonstrated by what is reported by Ibn Wahab from Bakir who asked  Nafi’:  What does Ibn Umar  (Allah  be  pleased  with him) think  of  al-Haruriyyah  (i.e;  al-Khawarij  who  were  also  called al-Haruriyyah  after the place -Harawra- where they gathered and were found by Ali ibn Abu Talib and the  Companions  of the  Prophet  [may Allah be pleased with them all] who supported him)?  Nafi’  answered: He thinks they are the most evil of people.  They  applied the verses which pertain to the kuffar on the believers.’  (NB- Imam  al-Bukhari has recorded Ibn Umar as saying in his Sahih [vol.9,  pg.50;  English edn]:  These  people (the  Khawarij  and  heretics ) took some verses that had been revealed  concerning the  disbelievers  and interpreted them as describing the believers ).

Al-Qardawi also  said  (pg.  42):  One  of  the causes of  such shallowness  is that  extremists  never  listen  to  people  who hold different views (and I can personally  testify to that), never accept any  dialogue  with them or  imagine  that  their own views  could be tested in the light of others, and may thereby be either  accepted or rejected.  Most of them have not been taught by reliable Muslim ulama who  are  specialised  in  the  field.  Rather,  they  have  received semi-knowledge directly  from  books  and  newspapers  without  any opportunity for revision or discussion which could test the learner’s understanding  and analyze the depth of his  knowledge.  They  simply read,  ‘understand’,  then  deduce  what they  wish.  However,  their reading, understanding, and deduction may well be wrong or deficient. There  might be someone  somewhere  who  opposes  their  opinions  on stronger and more valid bases, but they are not aware of that because nobody has drawn their attention to such a possibility.  These devout young  people  have  ignored  the facts that if they want to study al Shari’ah, they must seek the help of reliable Muslim  scholars.  They cannot venture into this extensive and entangled  discipline  without the  guidance of  reliable  Muslim  scholars  who can  interpret  and explain  obscurities,  define terms, and point out the  relationships between the parts and the whole and also equate  similarities.  Those who  venture  into it alone  will  meet  with  the same  catastrophic results  which  could  certainly  befall the  unskilled  swimmer  who ventures  into  dangerous  waters.  Proper  knowledge  of al Shari’ah cannot be  perfected  without  practice  and close  contact  with the experts,  especially in those areas where opinions diverge, evidences seem to contradict  each other, and certain  matters seem to be under suspicion.  This is why our  venerable  ‘ulama’ have warned us not to seek to study and  understand al Qur’an al Karim through a person who has only  memorized it without any knowledge of its contents,  nor to seek knowledge  through a person who has acquired his own “knowledge” from reading  newspapers  and journals  only, without being  properly instructed by reputable and qualified scholars.”  (source)
